Recently I was talking to a friend of mine. We were discussing many things and at one point the conversation came to him going to the gym all the time because he wants to feel and look nice. I am always supportive of that because if he wants to look better, then he should look better. He looks great as he is but if that’s going to make him happy, then that is fine. Soon after, the conversation came to makeup and then women’s fashion.
First I want to talk about the fashion part of this. He told me that “Guys don’t like it when girls wear high waisted things”. “Guys don’t like it when girls wear heels.” “Guys don’t like it when girls wear jeans.” He just listed all these things that guys don’t like girls wearing. You know what..? I couldn’t fucking care less. We don’t dress to impress you. Sure, sometimes we might wear something in an attempt to make you think we are more attractive but generally speaking, girls dress for themselves. We are going to wear something we are comfortable in. Something that we think makes us look nice. Something that we thinks flatters us. And that’s too fucking bad for you if you don’t like it. You don’t like it..? Then don’t wear it. We’re not asking you to. Just let us be comfortable in what we want to wear, because we are wearing it for ourselves.
Now I want to talk about makeup. He proceeded to tell me that girls who wear makeup look slutty, and look fake, and look stupid, and we shouldn’t want to change what we look like. This made me so incredibly mad for several reasons.
1) What exactly does a ‘slut’ look like? And why is ‘looking like a slut’ supposed to be a bad thing..? As long as everyone involved in the sexual acts wants to do it, it is leg an and no one is getting hurt, then being a slut isn’t a problem at all. It shouldn’t be seen as one.
2) Makeup isn’t always caked on. You don’t always look fake with it on. Generally it is used to enhance the features we like best about ourselves and hide the ones we don’t like as much, because we’d prefer people to look at the good features rather than the ones we are self conscious about!
3) You fucking hypocritical human. You just sat there for an hour telling me you go to the gym to change your appearance to make yourself feel more attractive. THAT IS WHAT MAKEUP DOES. IT IS A FAST WAY TO CHANGE SOMETHING WE ARE INSECURE ABOUT. We aren’t changing who we are as a person by wearing makeup. It gives us confidence and that is all there is to it! Just like you go to the gym to have a better body, makeup makes us feel better about ourselves. It’s no fucking different. That is one of the biggest double standards and it just makes me so infuriated.
All in all, we shouldn’t have to worry about what you want because we aren’t living for you. We are living for ourselves. We want to be comfortable and confident and appreciate how we look and if you don’t like it then that is too fucking bad for you. You’re not the one wearing the clothes or the makeup so you can just shut the fuck up.
